 Math

We will be using the Scott Foresman textbooks for math. It is closely aligned with the California state standards and across other grade levels to ensure continuous growth.

Below you will find some great links to Math!  Yes, math can be fun if you give it a try.  On these sites you'll be able to play some games, enhance your skills and study concepts covered in class!

  • Play Ball!! What is Math Baseball? Well let your brain have some fun! Try this math game out and before ya know it, you'll be getting a homerun!

 Laanguage Arts

Students will be introduced to various types of genres in literature including: realistic fiction, biographies, fantasy, fiction, non-fictional stories. Stories from Houghton Mifflin Reading California, our adopted series, will also be explored. Emphasis will also be placed on comparing and contrasting elements of literature. Students will be reading silently in class and will also be required to read at least twenty (20) minutes at home each night. I will also be reading to them and I encourage students to read aloud to you and that you read to them too!

Each student will be keeping a Reading Journal and be asked to respond critically, creatively, and logically to various types of literature selections.

Students will be encouraged to practice their oral presentation through oral reports in various subject areas, book reports, and participation in classroom discussions. Students will also be taught proper communication techniques so that they can become good public speakers.

Written Expression – We will be doing a lot of writing this year. Writing will be embedded throughout the curriculum. Students will be working on topic sentences, proper paragraphing, summaries, and response to literature, narratives, and informational reports. There will be an in class Writer’s Workshop time and there will also be a Home Writing Program. In both areas, we will be practicing the steps of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, responding, revising, editing (self, peer & adult), and publishing. Students will keep a portfolio with all of their writing. This is very concrete evidence that helps to validate their successes as they learn the different areas of the writing process.

Finally, during the year students will be practicing their cursive.  Assignments should be done in cursive whenever possible, unless otherwise stated differently by the teacher.
